HANUMAN LIFTING THE MOUNTAIN

South India, 17th Century
Bronze
Height: 3.25 in (8 cm)
Width: 1.75 in (4.5 cm)
Depth: 1.25 in (3 cm)

NON-EXPORTABLE REGISTERED ANTIQUITY

Referred to as Sankat Mochan (the remover of troubles and obstacles), this posture of Hanuman is a rare depiction in bronze imagery for the region. Here, Hanuman holds a gada (mace) in his left hand while the other hand is outstretched. In similar iconography, it usually holds the Dronagiri mountain, the source of the magical Sanjeevini herb needed to heal Lakshman after he was wounded by Ravana’s son Indrajit. The right leg complements the position of the hand and rests on a boulder. He stands on an upturned, single‒petalled lotus on a circular base. He has a small prabhavali (ornamental halo‒like arch) attached around his kiritamukuta (divine crown).
