This signed photograph captures Mahatma Gandhi in an informal and candid moment, turning gently toward the camera with an expression of warmth and immediacy rarely encountered in more formal political portraiture of the period. Associated with Gandhi’s later years at Sevagram Ashram and Birla House during the 1940s, the image belongs to a broader visual culture through which Gandhian imagery circulated widely across late colonial India.

Variants of the present photograph were distributed during the pre-independence era by publishers and photographic firms such as S S Brijbasi & Sons, Karachi, situating the work within the commercial and documentary networks that disseminated Gandhi’s image across the subcontinent prior to Partition. The Karachi association carries additional resonance within the present provenance, given Anand T Hingorani’s Sindhi origins and his close personal association with Gandhi.

The photograph bears Gandhi’s handwritten Hindi inscription “Bapu ke Ashirvad” (“Blessings from Bapu”) and was gifted to Anand T. Hingorani. More than a formal autograph, the inscription reflects the intimate relationship between Gandhi and the Hingorani family, whose association extended beyond politics into mentorship, personal guidance, and lifelong intellectual companionship.

Anand T Hingorani occupied a singular position within Gandhi’s inner circle. A participant in the Dandi March and later editor of Harijan, Hingorani devoted much of his life to preserving and disseminating Gandhian writings and philosophy. The photographs preserved within the family archive, therefore, possess significance not merely as signed images but as deeply personal documents of lived association and trust.

Preserved within the Hingorani family for decades, the present photograph forms part of one of the most important privately held Gandhian archives to appear at auction in India, documenting not only Gandhi's political leadership but also his relationships with those closest to him.
