In 1539, it fell into the hands of Emperor Sher Shah Suri, subsequently coming under the control of Raja Man Singh, the Hindu governor of Bengal and Bihar during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar.Archer quotes a description by Thomas Daniell: "This building, composed of grey granite, is of singular construction, and has the appearance of great antiquity. The Hindoos, who formerly preferred elevated places for their temples, could not, it would seem, resist the temptation of building in this place, the situation being delightful, and water and wood, with every other convenience, abundant"Thomas Daniell drew inspiration for his monument to Warren Hastings in Melchet Park, Wiltshire, from the porch dating back to 1800. Warren Hastings (1732-1818) served as the Governor-General of India and was also the patron of William Hodges, an artist who journeyed to India prior to the Daniells.Thomas Daniell (1749–1840)Thomas Daniell was an acclaimed English artist known for his striking landscapes and architectural views, particularly those depicting India. Born in Kingston upon Thames, England, Daniell initially trained as a herald painter before enrolling at the Royal Academy in 1773. Seeking greater opportunities, he journeyed to India in 1786 with his nephew, William Daniell, under the patronage of the East India Company. People celebrate their work from this period for capturing the grandeur and diversity of India's landscapes, architecture, and cultural heritage.One of Daniell's most famous accomplishments is the monumental series Oriental Scenery (1795–1808), a collection of aquatints showcasing 144 detailed views of Indian sites, including ancient temples, fortresses, and urban vistas. These works were instrumental in shaping Western perceptions of India during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.Daniell's works often combined artistic skill with careful observation, emphasizing both picturesque beauty and architectural accuracy. The first was an arduous voyage that started in Calcutta and took them to Delhi via the Indo-Gangetic Plain, up into the Garhwal Himalayas, and back to Calcutta via Lucknow. They then travelled through what are now Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on their trip across the south. The present lot is one such work that they did on there tour to South. After that, they set sail for Bombay and saw numerous Maharashtrian rock-cut temples. 'Upon turning the angle of a hill, which rose abruptly from the valley, the fall burst suddenly upon our sight. It was indeed a magnificent spectacle. The impression excited was so uncommon, that I was obliged to close my eyes for a moment, in order to recover from the sudden and almost astounding surprise. Though the roar of the cataract had been long heard before we reached it, so that we were not unprepared for something more than commonly imposing, the reality far transcended our expectations. It is precipitated from a height of one hundred and fifty feet, pouring over the steep a prodigious body of water, which, forcing its way betwixt intervening rocks, among which it boils and hisses with tremendous energy, falls into the deep, dark pool beneath with a din and turbulence that are almost deafening. ... There is a tremendous vortex just below the fall, caused by its sudden and violent pressure upon the surface below, so that no one can safely approach within reach of the spray. The waters of this spot are highly sacred, Puppanassum, the name which the place bears, signifying the washing away of sins. A great number of devotees are to be seen at all times bathing in this consecrated river. ... By the side of this celebrated fall there is a rock which is most highly venerated. It is covered with a rude bas-relief, before which pilgrims and other visitants to these holy waters prostrate themselves performing at the same time the most grotesque gesticulations that can be imagined. Fakeers are also to be found—and where are they not in India?—among the swarms of fanatics who daily practise their fantastic ceremonials before these mystical sculptures.' (The Oriental Annual, London, 1834, vol. I, pp.61-2)During their tour of South India in 1792–1793 the Daniells stopped at the falls in the then unmapped Tinnevelly District of Tamil Nadu. There are three other pictures of the Falls by Thomas Daniell: the larger variant in the Victoria Memorial, Calcutta (Shellim, TD28, painted in 1792 and included in the Madras Lottery in 1793), and two more distant views (TD42, painted and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1800, and TD78, painted and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1812).
