Louis Valtat was born in Normandy in 1869 to a wealthy family of ship owners. Encouraged by his father an amateur painter himself the young Valtat chose to follow a career as an artist and left for Paris in 1887. There he quickly befriended his contemporaries Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard
