Sudama visiting Krishna is one of the more popular subjects from the late 18th century series of Bhagwat Puran, Dasham Skand paintings. Three sketches of this episode were recorded by W G Archer in his survey of paintings from the Punjab hills (W G Archer, Indian Paintings From the Punjab Hills Volume I, London: Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications Limited, 1973, p. 87, no 39; p. 113, no 7; p. 114, no 8). B N Goswamy and Eberhard Fischer subsequently uncovered the genealogy of the artists and ascribe the style of these paintings to the first generation of painters after Nainsukh and Manaku. Several versions of these sketches and paintings were made, as events of the episode (in different Pahari schools) and they continue to trigger the imagination of artists almost two centuries later. This painting possibly falls in this group of latter versions.
