This Doha (couplet) written on the yellow colophon praises Lord Krishna’s physical appearance like those seen in Rasik Priya couplets written by Keshavdas. (footnote to be inserted, could be a translation of Jaya Deva’s Geet-Govind, difficult to ascertain in the absence of a title in the colophon). The Doha is in Devanagri script and a Central Indian regional (Braj?) dialect. The illustration enunciates the text and includes all metaphors and similes.
Though Radha’s name is not mentioned in the colophon; of the five Gopis depicted, the one seated opposite Krishna could be her as she is painted larger in proportion to others. Radha was the closest friend of Krishna and was given much importance in Bhakti and Riti kavya poetry and their consequent visualization. The Blue hued Krishna is seen in a vitarka mudra (preaching or a discussion gesture) with his right hand. Noteworthy details include the
presence of a full moon in the blue evening sky and its reflection in the dark waters of the foreground.
The painting style and format conform to an early eighteenth-century style where the face and figures are closer to the style of the artist ‘Mun’ while colours and composition look back at artist ‘Sahibdin' idioms, both stalwarts of the Mewar court atelier.
