Krishna is seen here in his popular makhanchor (stealing butter) image. This delicate and subtle rendering has Krishna seated on a carved chair, holding a decorated pot in his left hand and taking out butter from his right hand. His mother Yashoda or a Sakhi (Krishna’s friend) is seen behind him, wearing a mustard saree and has a parrot in her left hand. Infant Krishna is shown wearing jewellery, a floral garland and has a yellow-golden angavastram. His hair is tied in a bun at the top of his head and a tiny morkuti (peacock feathered head ornament) with tassels decorates his hair. Krishna’s face and jewellery are rendered with utmost refinement and intricacy. The green and red gem encrusted jewellery is teamed with different sized pearls and tassels. The lady behind him is also bedecked in jewellery and has a long braid flowing along her back. Krishna’s chair has carved European patterns on it and its upholstery is shaded blue with golden zari work. The ground of the painting is unpainted and cusped arches at the top have fine chequered patterns within it and a running geometric pattern above. Both the face and figures are rendered in monochromatic tones, but the jewellery and furniture are detailed in pattern and colours. A ruled line is drawn along the edges.
