A significant component of B Prabha’s oeuvre was her sustained engagement with the plight of women in India. Born in Nagpur, Prabha became an artist at a time when relatively few Indian women could practise art as a profession. She is best remembered for her portrayals of rural women and their daily lives, a subject that became central to her practice. As the artist observed, “My intention is not to project realism but to record my impression of the given moment.” (B Prabha, quoted in Bonhams, Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art, 2026, p. 12, online) Writing in 1969, P R Ramachandra Rao described Prabha’s women as “the stylised, elongated figure” presented through “pictorial statements of decorative finesse,” with backgrounds that progressively “verge on the abstract.” (P R Ramachandra Rao, Contemporary Indian Art, Hyderabad: Art Hyderabad, 1969.)

The present lot depicts a solitary woman seated upon a rock; her elongated figure draped in a flowing white sari against a muted grey ground. Her sombre expression and distant gaze recall Prabha’s recurring portrayal of women as introspective, rarely smiling figures. As Prabha explained, “I have seen many women and even studied them closely. And I have yet to see one happy woman.” (B Prabha, quoted in Nivedita Jayaram Pawar, “B Prabha, Painter,” YoungBuzz, online) Affixed to the stretcher is the artist’s personal visiting card, bearing a pen‒and‒ink sketch of the same composition and offering a preliminary glimpse of the work.
