Among the many signed photographs of Mahatma Gandhi that survive, few possess the documentary and intellectual significance of the present lot. The close-up composition is itself exceptional. Rather than presenting Gandhi as a public leader or political icon, the photographer isolates his hands engaged in the act of writing. The image thus foregrounds one of Gandhi's most powerful means of communication—the written word. Through thousands of letters, articles, editorials, notes, and manuscripts, Gandhi articulated his political philosophy, communicated with followers and opponents alike, and helped shape the intellectual and moral foundations of India's freedom movement.

Presented to Anand T Hingorani with Gandhi's handwritten Hindi inscription, "Bapu ke Ashirvad" ("Blessings from Bapu"), the photograph assumed a deeply personal significance. Hingorani was far more than a correspondent. A participant in the Dandi March and later associated with Harijan, he devoted decades to collecting, organising and publishing Gandhi's writings for future generations.

Its importance is further enhanced by the survival of a related letter from Gandhi to Hingorani. In his foreword dated 1 March 1941, Gandhi warmly endorsed Hingorani's project of collecting his writings, observing:

"I like Anand Hingorani's idea of collecting my writings under suitable heads. The reader will not fail to appreciate the labour he has given to securing attractive printing and binding."

This letter establishes an exceptionally rare documentary association between the photograph and Gandhi's approval of the publication in which it appeared. Rather than being an isolated presentation photograph, the image became the authorised visual representation accompanying Gandhi's published writings. The same photograph was subsequently reproduced in numerous Gandhian books and publications, often printed together with or immediately beneath Gandhi's blessing, creating a lasting visual identity for Hingorani's editorial series. The accompanying documentation demonstrates that this was not an incidental illustration but the very image chosen to represent Gandhi's endorsement of the project.

Preserved within the Hingorani family for more than eight decades, the photograph and its corresponding letter together constitute a remarkable archival pairing. They unite Gandhi's image, autograph, and written endorsement within a single documented history, illustrating not only his personal relationship with Anand T. Hingorani but also Hingorani's pivotal role in preserving, publishing and disseminating Gandhi's intellectual legacy. As such, the present lot transcends the category of a signed photograph and stands as an important artefact in the history of Gandhian publishing and the transmission of his ideas.
