DEVOTIONAL PICHWAI WITH SWAROOPS

Nathdwara, Late 19th Century
Natural pigments on cloth
47.25 x 37.75 in (120 x 96 cm)

NON-EXPORTABLE REGISTERED ANTIQUITY

This vibrant pichwai depicts Shrinathji as the central deity, standing within a temple pavilion and lavishly adorned with jewellery and garlands. The inclusion of attendant priests heightens the devotional (bhakti) atmosphere characteristic of the Pushtimarg tradition. Originally, such paintings would have functioned as decorative backdrops for a sculptural image of the deity. The presence of a radiant sun is a notable feature, signalling a daytime darshan (viewing of a deity), in contrast to the more commonly represented nocturnal settings. The finesse with which the gopis’ faces are rendered is noteworthy. Surrounding the central figure on all four sides are seasonal manifestations of Shrinathji. In addition to the sun, various deities are shown assembled to witness his resplendent appearance. The combination of meticulous detail and a medium scale make this work a visual delight.
