Comprising a teapot and sugar pot, each with floral repoussé on the surface, the teapot with an eagle-head spout and the lid with a bird-shaped handle. The base bears a 1978 Sheffield hallmark, the maker’s mark of Roberts & Belk Ltd and the stamp ‘Made in England’ in silver.

This finely modelled pair depicts two recumbent lions facing one another, each poised upon a rectangular, ornamented base. The lions are carved in wood and covered with sheets of silver, with their bodies, faces and deeply worked manes rendered naturalistically with great attention to detail.

The ornaments are believed to depict a cobra with its hood extended, with the mythical jewel, or mani, associated with the snake represented by a pyramidal knob and its eggs by the orbs at either side. The reverse features stylised ‘footprints’ in the form of a large, circular gold appliqué. The ornaments are made of sheet gold filled with lac or wax.
