PROVENANCE
From an Important Private Collection, Mumbai. Acquired between 1960 to 1970

This intact bronze of Sridevi would originally have formed part of a triad with Vishnu and Bhudevi. She stands in a graceful tribhanga posture, her left arm raised and holding a lotus bud. A tall, closely fitted crown frames her head, while large cylindrical earrings descend along her lobes with a slight natural tilt. Her figure is sensitively modelled and well-proportioned, embodying stylistic traits of the preceding Chola Dynasty. The jewellery is simple and harmonious. The hip has a natural sway with the left leg bearing the body’s weight in poised balance. At the reverse, the waist sash fans out into two finely detailed ends. The icon is well-preserved and its execution strongly suggests the hand of an accomplished master.
