Inspired by the story of the demon king Hidimba from the Mahabharata, Latika Katt lends her unique style to the present lot with the root motif and abstracted human anatomy. The daughter of a botanist, she drew deeply from the interconnectedness of nature, particularly the idea of roots that bind ecosystems and communities together. The solidity of the present lot is offset by an underlying fragility that reflects Katt’s enduring interest in capturing the essence of the human condition and experience through organic forms, moulded in diverse materials and mediums. As art critic and poet Keshav Malik has remarked, “Latika, with all her spiritual passion for the good earth, has the power to transform, and which means she is able to dominate untruth.”(Keshav Malik, Latika Katt: Salt of the Earth, New Delhi: Anant Art Gallery, 2006). In her final years Katt continued working from her studio in Jaipur, where she drew inspiration from the lush environment around her. Her works were regularly displayed at gallerist Peter Nagy’s prestigious sculpture park at the Madhavendra Palace in Nahargarh fort. The artist passed away in January 2025.
