Baiga art is an indigenous artform exclusive to the Baiga community of Central India. Unlike most artistic traditions in the country, the Baiga artform was developed only recently when contemporary artist Ashish Swami moved to Umaria in eastern Madhya Pradesh and encouraged and trained the local women to paint. Practiced primarily by women, the unique and fresh Baiga style of painting is inspired by the community’s centuries-old culture as well as dance and music traditions. In her works, she often represents varied forms of femininity and represents how these embodiments can converse with themes of sanctity and divinity. Through her works she brings the fleeting past into present public memory so that these goddess like figures, joyfully playing musical instruments and composing rhythms of their own making, stand as reminders for her community to be in sync with the beat of their rich culture.
