Narmada Prasad Tekam was a distinguished Gond artist from Madhya Pradesh, whose remarkable journey from the village of Patangarh to international acclaim is a fascinating story of talent and perseverance. His artistic path began in childhood while herding cattle under the blazing sun along the banks of the River Singni. There, he would draw intricate figures and patterns in the soft, white sand—a quiet but powerful beginning to a lifelong devotion to art.
Entirely self-taught, Tekam soon began painting on the walls of his home, using natural pigments extracted from coloured clays, leaves and flowers. These early works depicted animals, deities, and scenes from daily life rooted deeply in the Gond worldview. In 1983, Tekam’s talent was formally recognized when he was invited to Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal by a team led by the renowned artist Jagdish Swaminathan, who had launched a pioneering initiative to discover and support tribal artists across Madhya Pradesh. Tekam’s paintings are known for their vibrant imagery—deities and demons, tigers, deer, birds, porcupines and forest scenes, reflecting a deep connection to nature and Gond mythology.
His contributions include illustrations for the bilingual book Gond Devlok, showcasing goddesses from Gond folklore. In 2006, he was awarded the Shikhar Samman, one of Madhya Pradesh’s highest civilian honors for artistic achievement. Through his richly expressive visual language, Narmada Prasad Tekam offered a compelling exploration of the natural world and the worlds of the divine, and the demonic.
